About Samuil's Fortress National Park-Museum
Samuil's Fortress is a medieval fortification between the Belasitsa and Ograzhden mountains, on a low hill above the Strumeshnitsa river about 5 km north of the village of Klyuch. It was probably built between 1009 and 1013, during the reign of Tsar Samuil, as part of a large system of walls closing the gorge.
In 1014 the Byzantine army of Emperor Basil II broke through here in the battle of Kleidion, one of the decisive events in the fall of the First Bulgarian Empire. The site is a national park-museum with a monument to Samuil.
