About the province
Silistra at a Glance
Silistra Province is in the north-east corner of Bulgaria, in Southern Dobruja, and is one of the least populated provinces in the country. It has seven municipalities. The town of Silistra lies on the south bank of the lower Danube, where the Romanian border stops following the river.
Silistra is a cultural, industrial, transport and educational centre for north-eastern Bulgaria, with a Late Roman tomb, a medieval fortress and an Ottoman fort. The economy is largely agricultural, and the Srebarna Nature Reserve, an important wetland for migrating birds, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
