Sofia City Province consists of a single municipality, the Sofia Capital Municipality. Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria and lies in the Sofia Valley at the foot of Vitosha mountain. Known as Serdica in antiquity, it has been inhabited since at least 7000 BC.
Sofia is the economic hub of the country and is ranked as a Beta global city. It is home to most major Bulgarian and international companies operating in Bulgaria, the Bulgarian National Bank and the Bulgarian Stock Exchange. Outsourcing, IT, finance and creative industries have grown quickly, supported by universities and a large, multilingual workforce.
