About the province

Burgas at a Glance

Burgas Province covers the southern Bulgarian Black Sea coast and is the largest of the 28 provinces by area, with 13 municipalities. It is named after the city of Burgas, the fourth-largest city in Bulgaria, which sits on Burgas Bay surrounded by the Burgas Lakes.

Burgas is an industrial, transport and tourist centre. LUKOIL Neftochim Burgas, the largest oil refinery in south-eastern Europe, is the biggest industrial employer, and the Port of Burgas and Burgas Airport make the city a key point on European transport corridors. Along the coast lie Sunny Beach, Nesebar, Pomorie, Sozopol and the quieter resorts of the far south, down to the Turkish border.

Worth knowing

  • Port of Burgas and Burgas Airport, part of the trans-European transport network
  • LUKOIL Neftochim Burgas: the largest oil refinery in south-eastern Europe
  • Most of Bulgaria's seaside hotel capacity: Sunny Beach, Nesebar, Sveti Vlas, Sozopol, Primorsko
  • Ancient City of Nessebar is a UNESCO World Heritage site
