About Heraclea Sintica Ancient City
Heraclea Sintica, also known as Heraclea Strymonike, was an ancient Greek city near today's village of Rupite in south-western Bulgaria. It was probably founded by Philip II of Macedon in the 4th century BC and was later a Roman town.
Excavations have uncovered a forum, public buildings and streets, and in 2002 a Latin inscription that confirmed the city's name. The site lies close to the church of St. Petka at Rupite.
