About the province
Smolyan at a Glance
Smolyan Province lies in south-central Bulgaria in the Rhodope Mountains, bordering Greece, and has ten municipalities. Its capital, Smolyan, is built along the narrow valley of the Cherna and Byala rivers at the foot of Golyam Perelik, the highest peak of the Rhodopes.
Tourism is the province's main opportunity. Pamporovo and Chepelare are among the main ski resorts in the country, and the Trigrad and Buynovo gorges, the Devil's Throat and Yagodina caves and the Wonderful Bridges rock formation attract visitors in summer. Villages such as Shiroka Laka and Momchilovtsi keep traditional Rhodope architecture.
