About the province
Pernik at a Glance
Pernik Province is in western Bulgaria next to the Serbian border. Its main city, Pernik, lies on the Struma River about 20 km south-west of Sofia and is the most populous town in western Bulgaria after the capital. The other municipalities are Breznik, Kovachevtsi, Radomir, Tran and Zemen.
Pernik grew as a coal-mining and steel town; today its closeness to Sofia and the Struma motorway make it a base for manufacturing, logistics and commuters. The town is also known for the Surva international festival of masquerade games, held every January.
