About the province
Kyustendil at a Glance
Kyustendil Province covers about 2.7% of Bulgaria's territory in the far west of the country, where its boundary follows the borders with North Macedonia and Serbia. Its capital, Kyustendil, lies about 90 km south-west of Sofia and has been settled since Thracian and Roman times.
Kyustendil is a centre of light industry, including footwear, clothing, packaging, furniture and food processing, and its valley is known as the orchard of Bulgaria for its fruit growing. The province includes Dupnitsa, the spa town of Sapareva Banya and the Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
