About Pirin National Park
Pirin National Park covers most of the Pirin Mountains in south-western Bulgaria and spans about 403 km². It is one of the three national parks in the country, with Rila and Central Balkan. Established in 1962, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, with the area extended in 2010.
Elevations range from 950 m to 2,914 m at Vihren, Bulgaria's second-highest summit. The park has more than a hundred glacial lakes and ancient forests of Bosnian and Macedonian pine. Bansko and Dobrinishte are the main gateways.
