Plovdiv at a Glance
Plovdiv Province is in central southern Bulgaria and has 18 municipalities. Its capital, Plovdiv, is the second-largest city in Bulgaria, about 144 km south-east of Sofia, and is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. It was European Capital of Culture in 2019.
Plovdiv is an important economic, transport, cultural and educational hub. The region's industrial parks, including the Trakia Economic Zone, host manufacturing in electronics, machinery, automotive parts and food. The province also includes Asenovgrad, Karlovo, Hisarya, the Bachkovo Monastery, and vineyards on the edge of the Rhodopes.
