Stara Zagora at a Glance
Stara Zagora Province is in south-central Bulgaria and has 11 municipalities. Its capital, Stara Zagora, is one of the largest cities in Bulgaria and lies in the Upper Thracian Plain near Kazanlak, Plovdiv and Sliven. Traces of settlement here go back to the 7th millennium BC.
The province is one of the most industrialised in Bulgaria. The Maritsa East complex of lignite mines and power plants near Radnevo and Galabovo is the country's largest energy hub, and Kazanlak is known for engineering and for the Rose Valley, the centre of rose oil production. The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
