About Roman Stadium of Philippopolis

The Stadium of Philippopolis was built in the 2nd century AD, when the city was the capital of the Roman province of Thracia. It was about 250 metres long and 50 metres wide and could seat up to 30,000 spectators, making it one of the largest Roman buildings in the Balkans.

Most of it lies under the pedestrian main street of Plovdiv. The curved northern end has been uncovered in Dzhumaya Square, where visitors can see the rows of marble seats.
