About Trajan's Gate, Stenos Fortress and Kostenets Waterfall
Trajan's Gate is a historic mountain pass near Ihtiman, known in antiquity as Succi. Emperor Trajan built a fortress here as a symbolic border between the provinces of Thrace and Macedonia. On 17 August 986 Tsar Samuil defeated the army of Emperor Basil II at the pass.
The Stenos fortress guarded the narrow valley of the Maritsa near Kostenets, and the Kostenets waterfall, about 12 metres high, lies in the forest above the village of the same name.
