About Troyan Monastery

The Monastery of the Dormition of the Holy Mother of God, known as Troyan Monastery, is the third largest monastery in Bulgaria. It stands on the banks of the Cherni Osam river near Oreshak, 10 km from Troyan, and was founded no later than the end of the 16th century.

Its main church was painted in 1847–1849 by Zahari Zograf, the leading painter of the Revival. The monastery was an important centre of the liberation movement, and Vasil Levski had a hiding place here.
