About Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Crypt
The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Patriarch of Bulgaria and one of the symbols of Sofia. It was built in 1882–1912 in the Neo-Byzantine style in memory of the Russian soldiers who died in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, and covers more than 3,000 square metres.
Its crypt houses a museum of Orthodox icons, part of the National Gallery, with icons from the 9th to the 19th century collected from across Bulgaria.
