About Peristera Fortress

Peristera fortress stands on a hill just north of the town of Peshtera. Its name comes from the Greek word for "dove". It had three rings of walls and six defence towers on the innermost wall.

Archaeologists date it to the 4th century, and it was used until at least the 7th century. An earlier Thracian sanctuary probably stood on the same spot.
