About Shipka Memorial Church
The Shipka Memorial Church of the Nativity of Christ stands at the north-western edge of the town of Shipka. It was built in 1885–1902 in the Russian style of the 17th century, with golden onion domes, in memory of the Russian and Bulgarian soldiers who died in the battles for the Shipka Pass in 1877–78.
Its crypt holds the remains of soldiers who fell in the defence of the pass. The monastery complex also includes monks' quarters, a pilgrims' house and a seminary.
