About Dryanovo Monastery and Bacho Kiro Cave
Dryanovo Monastery stands in the Andaka valley, inside the Bulgarka Nature Park, 5 km from Dryanovo. It was founded in the 12th century and is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. In 1876, during the April Uprising, rebels held out here for nine days against Ottoman forces; a museum and an ossuary remember them.
Bacho Kiro Cave lies 300 metres from the monastery. It is a four-storey labyrinth of galleries, named after the teacher and revolutionary Bacho Kiro, and has yielded some of the oldest remains of modern humans in Europe.
