About Pliska National Archaeological Reserve and Great Basilica
The Pliska reserve lies 28 km north-east of Shumen and 3 km from the modern town of Pliska. Pliska was the first capital of Bulgaria, from the foundation of the state by Khan Asparuh in 681 until 893, and one of the largest towns of its time in Europe.
The Great Basilica was built on the orders of Prince Boris I after his baptism in 864 and completed around 875. It was 102.5 metres long and 30 metres wide, with an archbishop's palace and monastery. Parts of the palace and walls have been restored.
