About Founders of the Bulgarian State Monument

The Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria, also called the Founders of the Bulgarian State Monument, stands on the plateau above Shumen. It was built in 1981 for the 1,300th anniversary of the First Bulgarian Empire.

The concrete monument, in a Cubist style, was designed by the sculptors Krum Damyanov and Ivan Slavov. It shows the early rulers of Bulgaria, from Khan Asparuh to Tsar Simeon, with mosaics inside. A long stairway of 1,300 steps leads up from the city.
