About Madara Rider National Reserve

The Madara reserve covers the cliffs of the Madara plateau east of Shumen. Its centre is the Great Cave, a rock shelter about 30 metres high, which gave shelter to people from the earliest times.

The Madara Rider, carved 23 metres up the cliff around the beginning of the 8th century, shows a horseman spearing a lion, with a dog behind. It is the only rock relief of its kind in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
