Pernik auf einen Blick
Die Provinz Pernik liegt in Westbulgarien an der serbischen Grenze. Ihre wichtigste Stadt, Pernik, liegt an der Struma etwa 20 km südwestlich von Sofia und ist nach der Hauptstadt die bevölkerungsreichste Stadt Westbulgariens. Die übrigen Gemeinden sind Breznik, Kovachevtsi, Radomir, Tran und Zemen.
Pernik wuchs als Kohlebergbau- und Stahlstadt; heute machen die Nähe zu Sofia und die Autobahn Struma sie zu einem Standort für Industrie, Logistik und Pendler. Die Stadt ist auch für das internationale Maskenspielfestival Surva bekannt, das jedes Jahr im Januar stattfindet.
