Early career

Vartan was born in Iskrets, Bulgaria, in 1944. Her father worked at the French embassy in Sofia, and her mother was Bulgarian of Hungarian descent. After the Soviet Army occupied Bulgaria in 1944, the family moved to Sofia. They emigrated to Paris in December 1952. Vartan learned French while attending school and became interested in jazz and rock and roll.1

In 1952, she appeared as a schoolgirl in the Bulgarian film Pod igoto. Her recording career began in 1961, when she sang “Panne d’essence” with Frankie Jordan. The song became a hit and brought her first appearance on French television. After leaving school, she signed with Decca Records and released her own recordings. In December 1961, she performed at the Olympia in Paris.1

Music and performance

Vartan’s early recordings included French versions of songs such as “The Loco-Motion” and “What’d I Say”. In 1963, she toured France with Johnny Hallyday and appeared with him in the film D’où viens-tu, Johnny? Her album Sylvie à Nashville included “La plus belle pour aller danser”, which topped the French chart and sold more than a million copies in Japan.1

Her performances often used elaborate dance choreography, and she appeared regularly on French and Italian television. During the 1960s and mid-1970s, annual shows with Hallyday drew full houses at the Olympia and the Palais des congrès de Paris. Vartan continued to tour and record after two serious car accidents. Her later hits included “Qu’est-ce qui fait pleurer les blondes?” and “Nicolas”.1

Later work

After a break from public performances, Vartan began recording and giving concerts of jazz ballads in 2004, including sold-out performances in Paris. She toured in 2009 across countries including France, Japan, the United States and Italy. In 2005, she was appointed WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Maternal and Child Health in the European Region. She was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour in 2009.1

Vartan married Hallyday in 1965; they had a son and divorced in 1980. She later married record producer Tony Scotti. Together they adopted a daughter from Bulgaria, born in 1997. Vartan is the aunt of actor Michael Vartan. Her career has been active from 1952 to the present, and she appeared in the 2025 film Once Upon My Mother.1

Her latest film is Once Upon My Mother (2025).1
