About Perperikon and the Monastery of St. John the Baptist
Perperikon is an ancient Thracian rock city 15 km north-east of Kardzhali, on a 470-metre rocky hill thought to have been a sacred place. It is the largest megalithic site in the Balkans; in the Middle Ages it was a fortress. Excavations since 2000 have revealed a palace-sanctuary cut into the rock, with altars, steps and rooms.
The Monastery of St. John the Baptist in Kardzhali is an early medieval complex with a fortress wall and towers. Its church was restored and consecrated again in 2000.
