About Nicopolis ad Istrum

Nicopolis ad Istrum was a Roman and early Byzantine town whose ruins lie at the village of Nikyup, 20 km north of Veliko Tarnovo. It was founded by Emperor Trajan in honour of his victory over the Dacians and reached its height under Hadrian, the Antonines and the Severans.

The excavated forum, streets and public buildings are still being studied. The site has been on UNESCO's Tentative List since 1984.
