About Dimum Roman Fort and Belene Camp Memorial

Dimum was a Roman fort and customs post on the Danube frontier, on the site of today's Belene. Its remains have been excavated near the river.

On Persin Island, across the arm of the Danube, the communist regime ran a forced labour camp from 1949 to 1987. A memorial chapel and monument honour its victims; the island is now part of the Persina Nature Park.
