St. Dimitar Basarbovski Rock Monastery

Basarbovo Monastery, the Monastery of Saint Dimitar Basarbovski, is an Orthodox cave monastery near Ruse. It lies about 35 metres above the Rusenski Lom river, next to the village of Basarbovo, and is the only rock monastery in Bulgaria that still has monks.

It was founded during the Second Bulgarian Empire and became famous in the 17th century through Saint Dimitar Basarbovski, a local shepherd who lived here as a hermit. Steps lead up the cliff to the church carved into the rock.
