Life and education

Canetti was born in Ruse in 1905 to a Sephardic Jewish family. He was the eldest of three sons. The family moved to Manchester in 1911, then to Lausanne and Vienna after his father’s death in 1912. Canetti spoke Ladino, Bulgarian, English and some French. His mother insisted that he learn German. After further moves to Zürich and Frankfurt, he returned to Vienna in 1924 to study chemistry, though his interests turned to philosophy and literature.1

Writing and ideas

Canetti began writing after entering Vienna’s literary circles. He was present during the Juli Revolt of 1927 and was particularly affected by the burning of books. He received a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Vienna in 1929, but never worked as a chemist. His early works included the play The Comedy of Vanity, published in 1934, and the novel Auto-da-Fé, published in 1935. He later explored crowds and group behaviour in his nonfiction book Crowds and Power.1

Awards and later life

After the Anschluss in 1938, Canetti and his first wife, Veza Taubner-Calderon, moved to London. He became a British citizen in 1952 and lived in Britain until the 1970s, later spending most of his final 20 years in Zürich. His autobiographical memoirs include The Tongue Set Free, The Torch in My Ear and The Play of the Eyes. In 1981, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature for writings marked by a broad outlook, a wealth of ideas and artistic power. He died in Zürich in 1994.1
