History

The origins of higher education in chemical technology in Bulgaria date to 1945, when an Industrial Chemistry Department was established within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the State Polytechnic. On 10 June 1953, the State Polytechnic was divided into four independent higher technical institutes. One of them was the Institute of Chemical Technology, which began with two faculties, Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy, and 11 specialities.1

Part-time study was introduced in 1953, and student admissions increased sharply from 1959. A research sector was established in 1960 to address technological problems faced by industrial enterprises. In 1963 the institute became the Higher Institute of Chemical Technology. In 1995, by decision of the National Assembly, it took its present Bulgarian name, the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy.1

Faculties and academic focus

The university’s stated mission includes preparing engineers, technologists and managers at all educational levels, alongside fundamental and applied research. Its areas of activity include chemical technologies, metallurgy, automation, biotechnology, ecology and management.1

Its listed teaching centres include centres for ecology, French-language education, European quality, German-language education, materials science with English-language instruction, and hydrogen technologies. The structure also includes a university computer centre and a central research laboratory.1

Research and governance

The research sector established in 1960 helped develop the institute as an education and research centre in chemistry and metallurgy. The university carries out both fundamental and applied research, including work on technological problems for industrial companies.1

The Academic Council guides educational, research, production and other activities. It consists of 75% habilitated academic staff, 15% non-habilitated staff, and 10% students and doctoral candidates. The rector is a member by right and chairs the council. Prof. Senya Terzieva has served as rector since 2019.1
