History

The institution opened on 1 April 1922 as the State Railway School, established by royal decree. Its original role was to train personnel for the railway system, with four-year courses combining theoretical instruction and practical work. Over time it was reorganised under several names, including a transport technical school and a higher railway institute.1

In 1984 the higher railway institute became the Higher Military Transport School “Todor Kableshkov”. The institution was demilitarised on 31 August 2000 and took its present name. It then adopted a structure in line with Bulgaria’s Higher Education Act and became a state specialised higher education institution.1

The university has three faculties. Its bachelor’s specialities include automobile engineering, railway engineering, transport construction, transport technology and management, transport economics, electrical power engineering, communication and signalling engineering, industrial management, engineering logistics, accounting, and ship mechanics and navigation.1
