History

The university became an independent educational institution in 1953. On 10 June that year, a decree of the Presidium of the National Assembly divided the State Polytechnic into four independent higher technical institutes. The Higher Institute of Mining and Geology was one of them and incorporated the Mining Faculty. [1]1

Since its establishment, the institution has combined engineering education with fundamental and applied research, and has provided opportunities for postgraduate qualification. It has trained more than 14,000 engineers for work in areas including geology, mining, energy and raw materials, construction and environmental protection. Its graduates include citizens of nearly 40 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. [1]1
