History
The academy was established in 1936 with a donation from Bulgarian merchant Dimitar Tsenov. In his 1912 will, he left more than five million gold leva to the Bulgarian state to establish a higher commercial school in Svishtov, modelled on German institutions. Tsar Boris III formally opened the school on 8 ноември 1936.1,2
The institution took several names during its history. In 1995, a decision of Bulgaria’s National Assembly transformed the Higher Institute of Finance and Economics into D. A. Tsenov Academy of Economics. It is described as the country’s third-oldest higher education institution.2
