About the province
Pazardzhik at a Glance
Pazardzhik Province lies in southern Bulgaria and has 12 municipalities. Its capital, Pazardzhik, is on the Maritsa river in the Upper Thracian Plain, about 37 km west of Plovdiv and 112 km south-east of Sofia, on the Trakia motorway.
The plain around Pazardzhik is fertile farmland, while Panagyurishte is the centre of Bulgaria's optical industry and a major copper extraction and processing site. In the Rhodopes, Velingrad is one of the country's most popular spa resorts, and Batak and Peshtera add reservoirs, caves and forests.
