Life and training

Zlatyu Georgiev Boyadzhiev was born in the village of Brezovo on 22 октомври 1903 г. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia and graduated in 1932. His work included portraits and landscapes, with subjects drawn mainly from the Old Town of Plovdiv and village life in the region. Plovdiv is Bulgaria’s second largest city.1

Two periods

Boyadzhiev’s work is divided into two main periods. The first lasted until 1951, when he suffered a stroke and temporarily gave up painting. Works from this period are characterised by a neoclassical approach and compositions depicting rural life. A few years after the stroke, he partially recovered and returned to painting. He then worked with his left hand, and his manner of painting changed substantially.1

Works and recognition

In the later period, Boyadzhiev’s style moved towards grotesque imagery. His compositions included dozens of shapes and used expressive colour. Among his well-known works are “Village of Brezovo”, “On the table” and “Two weddings”. He received the title Hero of Socialist Labor and was named a Winner of the Union of Bulgarian Artists’ “Vladimir Dimitrov - the Master”. Many of his paintings are displayed in a house museum in Plovdiv. Boyadzhiev died on 2 февруари 1976 г.1
