Household electricity cost €0.13 per kWh in Bulgaria in the first half of 2026, the second lowest in the EU, while household gas fell by 14.5%, the biggest drop in the bloc.
Bulgarian households paid some of the lowest energy prices in the European Union in the first half of 2026, according to Eurostat data published on 30 October and reported by The Sofia Globe and BTA.
For electricity, Bulgaria and Malta had the second-lowest household prices in the EU, at €0.13 per kilowatt-hour each. Only Hungary was cheaper, at €0.11. The highest prices were in Ireland, at €0.39, followed by Germany and Belgium at €0.36. Six countries reported prices above €0.30 per kWh, and five below €0.20.
The EU average for household electricity fell by 2.2% to €0.28 per kWh, from €0.29 in the second half of 2025, but prices remained well above levels from before the 2022 energy crisis, Eurostat said. Taxes and levies made up 28.4% of the final bill, down from 28.9%.
For natural gas, the average EU household price fell to €0.11 per kWh, down 10.2% from the second half of 2025 and 3.5% from a year earlier, the lowest since the first half of 2022. In Bulgaria the price was €0.0654 per kWh. Measured in national currencies, Bulgaria recorded the largest fall in the EU compared with the first half of 2025, at 14.5%, ahead of Greece at 11.3% and Spain at 10%. The cheapest gas was in Hungary at €0.03 per kWh, followed by Croatia at €0.05.
Prices in euros do not tell the whole story, because incomes differ between countries. When measured in purchasing power standards, which adjust for the cost of living, Bulgaria's gas price was 10.3 per 100 kWh, compared with 4.3 in Hungary and 17.7 in Sweden.
The government said in October that household electricity and district heating prices will stay unchanged until July 2027. For investors in energy, the figures show how much room there is between regulated household prices and the market prices paid elsewhere in Europe.
