History
UNWE traces its origins to the Free University of Political and Economic Sciences, established in 1920 on the initiative of Stefan Bobchev. It became the State Higher Education School of Finance and Administrative Sciences in 1940, and in 1947 was incorporated into Sofia University. The institution regained independence in 1951 as a higher economic institute.1,2
Named the Karl Marx Higher Institute of Economics in 1953, it was renamed the University of National and World Economy by a decision of its Academic Board on 27 April 1990. The formal change was confirmed by an act of the National Assembly in 1995.1,2
