History
The academy traces its origins to the Maritime School established in Ruse in 1881 to train machinists and stokers for the Bulgarian fleet. In 1900, its engineering school moved to Varna. Officer training developed separately from 1893, when a temporary naval sciences course opened in Ruse.1,2
The institution received specialised higher maritime school status in 1942. It adopted the name Nikola Vaptsarov in 1949, honouring a poet who had graduated from the school. Since 1991 it has been known as Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy. It moved to its present Varna campus in 1954.1,2
