The carpet - a story of the world, of dreams and hope, of the way of people in time.
The voyage into the world of the Chiprovtzi carpet and its symbolism is a long way leading to a person’s inner self and to the world’s cultural treasures. Into the humble Chiprovtzi carpet have been woven patterns, textures and harmonies that have preserved memories of centuries past.
The first written record for the Chiprovtzi carpet is dated from 1836 and was made by the French traveler Amee Buyet but the carpets themselves carry symbols from time immemorial. Some say that the origin of the carpet could be traced back to the art tradition of ancient Egypt, and another theory points that ancient Thracians could have received the knowledge for carpet making from the people of mysterious Atlantis.
Carpets are woven in the Caucusus, Turkey, Egypt, Spain, Iran, India, and the most ancient carpets have been found in Scythian mounds in the Altai mountains and are dated from 4th century B.C.
The carpet industry in Chiprovtzi was established in XVII century. The ornaments of the old carpets were made in geometric way. The color harmony is based on the harmony of cold and warm colors.
