SHAMTOSM - PLC Sofia is a successor of the National centre of sports medicine

In 1952 by decision of the National Ministry of Sanitation (NMS), was established the first in the country specialized sports medicine centre - Sofia city medical-sports dispencary with the mission to resolve the problems connected with the effective usage of the sport for the population's health, to organize systematic enterprises on dispencary observation of the health and functional condition of the sportsmen in the national teams and to accomplish active control for obeying the medicine control law.

By Ordinance № 2844 / 09.03.1970 of NMS, the Sofia city medical-sports dispencary becomes Republican centre of sports medicine. The activity of the centre includes:

- Accomplishes organisational, methodical help and management of the sports medicine network and the medicinal-prophylactic institutions in the country connected with sports medicine questions and publishes written materials and instructions.

- Executes the sports- medicine dispencary functions in Sofia, ensures medical service for national, olympics and fellowships teams.

- Realizes medical treatment in the area of traumatology, orthopedy and sports medicine in hospital for the ill sportsmen.

- Develops science-research and practical tasks on the medicine problems of high sports mastership.

SHAMTOSM - PLC Sofia lasts in community's mind with its good name and prestige and is also known as Sports-medicine centre.

INTERRELATIONS WITH OTHER MEDICINAL CENTRES AND ORGANISATIONS

SHAMTOSM - PLC Sofia keeps contacts with medicinal and health-care centres in the whole country. It ensures experts for consultation for other medicinal centres, who ask its help. Receives all patients coming from other medicinal centres for rendering special medicinal assistance. Uses experts from other areas for clarification of some cases, if needed.

Contacts have been settled up with thesports organisations for medical treatment of sportsmen in the areas of traumatology, orthopedy and sports medicine, for this cause there is one day in the month defined for free consultations, connected with prophylactic and the early discovery of diseases from overtension of the locomotory system.

The establishment of agreement relations for joint activity for the medical services of theactive sportsmen is foreseen by detaching the pre-hospital help and founding of a medical centre, which performs the prophylactical and pre-competitional surveys. Development of programs for early discovery of diseases and traumas and their cure, appliance of different methodics for the training process in order to preserve diseases provoked by overtense of the locomotory system.

SHAMTOSM - PLC Sofia is the preferable study base for the students of kinesotherapy in the National Sports Academy. The Bulgarian Olympics Comitee reapeatedly sends foreign specialists to train and exchange experience in the areas of traumatology and sports medicine.
